Playable Race – Bloodborne

Bloodborne are elementals created by sites of intense, bloody violence. Due to the nature of the Realm, Bloodflow has an abundance of this race and is one of the few locations across Veneon where they’re populated enough to form communities. Much like other elementals, their bodies and motives are alien to most.

Flowing and Familiar

Similarly to most elementals, Bloodborne possess a vaguely humanoid form, yet their bodies are made up entirely of ever-flowing blood. They appear in two primary forms. The Freshblooded Bloodborne are a thin liquid that flows quickly and holds little resistance against outside forces. They make up for this with innate magical properties and the ability to split their bodies apart into smaller entities. Congealed Bloodborne are more akin to a thick, red mud in consistency. Their bodies are tough and near-impossible to shift forcibly.

Both variations are deep, blood-red in colouration and aside from a vaguely humanoid head and pair of arms, they appear entirely unique to one another. One might manifest as a flowing column of blood that travels like a gory slug, while another might form with legs or several stumps on which they move around.

Due to their highly adaptable bodies, clothing and armour is not commonly seen among the race, and those that do choose to wear it will often be forced to abandon it when travelling through spaces in which their armour cannot fit.

Puddles of Blood

The Bloodborne of Bloodflow are unique in the fact that they are common enough to find others of their kind regularly and despite their alien minds, they do seem to harbor a sense of community. When they find another of their species, the Bloodborne will group together, travelling and living as one unit. It is common to find a large puddle of seemingly regular blood, only to have it rise up and split into several individual Bloodborne.

Conflict is unheard of in these groups. Whether it be a hivemind-like effect aligning their goals or simply their elemental minds finding no reason to challenge others of its kind, Bloodborne seem to get along without issue.

Unknowable Mind

While Bloodborne don’t have a visible mouth, they are capable of speech. Those that have conversed with them say it is akin to speaking with someone yelling from within a waterfall, with the voice sounding strained and muffled. The conversations are typically confusing and lack social politeness, yet Bloodborne don’t seem particularly cruel, just incredibly practical and curious.

Bloodborne Names

Bloodborne seem to have an unspoken method of identifying and referring to one another. When they are given a name by members of other races, they accept it without seeing a reason to argue or change it. This means that a Bloodborne could have a name from any walk of life or culture and will likely not know its meaning or cultural relevance.

Final Thoughts

Thanks for reading! The Bloodborne are super interesting due to being one of the few non-humanoid playable races. It’s been a challenge to make them seem alien, without making them unplayable to our very human players! They might be a little strong, even compared to other Veneon races, but only in ways that will make the game more exciting for both players and DM!
